Atlantic Ocean - West Coast - 4 Day Cycle
Schedule - Day 1
We leave Cape Town and transfer to the West Coast National Park. We cycle through the stunning park, with shimmering lagoons leading into deep blue ocean. The bird life is spectacular with flamingos, pelicans, osprey, sandpipers, and many other wetland species. During Spring (August - October), the park bursts into a kaleidoscope of colour with fields of flowers and sweet smelling succulents and flora year-round.
Mammals include Eland, Red Hartebeest and Caracal in addition to whale and dolphin viewing in season. We overnight at Flamingo Joe’s Beach Camp and enjoy sundowners followed by a traditional seafood braai consisting of crayfish (lobster), a seafood potjie (delicious stew) and sumptious west coast wines (vegetarian options available). After supper, a local astronomer shows us the wonders of the night skies around an open fire.
Schedule - Day 2
After breakfast, we cycle out of the park and continue towards Clanwilliam, a picturesque town at the foot of the majestic Cederberg Mountains, famous for the watersports on its impressive dam. Clanwilliam is the only place in the world where Rooibos tea is cultivated and we cycle to a tea plantation to see this first hand.
Cycle onwards for a picnic lunch followed by a guided tour observing traditional rock art by the San Bushmen who were the first inhabitants of the Cape.
We cycle through stunning mountain roads of the Cederberg, past small farming communities, orchards and the Karukareb Wilderness Reserve where we enjoy an evening in the mountains sleeping under the stars in luxury canvas tents overlooking the river.
Schedule - Day 3
We return to the coast and cycle along the coastal road from Elands Bay to Shelley Point, one of the most beautiful and quaint places to stay in the region.
En route we may join local fisherman to land our own catch for a braai (barbeque) on the beach. In spring this route is famous for the wild flowers and whaling (July-November) and dolphins during summer. In late afternoon we check into the five star Shelly Point Lodge where guests can enjoy a complimentary spa treatment or round of golf on the exclusive 9-hole course.
Schedule - Day 4
After breakfast, we cycle to Paternoster, one of the last traditional fishing villages on the West Coast. We explore the village and then cycle to Tittiesbaai Nature Reserve, home to the Cape Columbine lighthouse, the last manned lighthouse built on the South African coastline.
In the reserve, we enjoy a farewell picnic lunch overlooking stunning coastal scenery before heading back to Cape Town.
