An hour and a half drive from Cape Town takes you along the west coast through some of South Africa's best kept secrets-where you can even see dolphins and whales at play during the season. Situated in the mouth of the Berg River, Velddrif is famous for its history of fishermen, guesthouses and the famous bird sanctuary of the Rocher Pan. Mention Velddrif to bird lovers and they'll twitch with joy about the Berg River sanctuary which draws migrant Waders and Flamingoes by their thousands. Other well known SA birds to look out for are Pelicans, Cormorants, Kingfishers, Herons, Ibis, Schrikes and Avocets. There are at least 240 species of birds sighted. Arrive at our meeting spot at 10:00 am to be welcomed by our qualified guides with tea, coffee, rusks or champagne and OJ. Board our charter boats or, for the more energetic, our 2-man kayaks for the trip up the river into the sanctuary. You'll go through the tidal wetlands of the berg river and enjoy the tranquility of the spectacular vista. We break for a gourmet lunch and wine tasting on the banks of the river, or just stay on board the boats-whatever pleases. For the more adventurous, a 9-metre bridge jump is a must. After lunch and generally relaxing, we make our way back to the start and wish you all a safe journey home at +/- 4:30-5:00 pm. |
